Conservative pundit Rich Lowry has some choice words for those who believe that Abu Ghraib is merely an aberration: take a look at our own prisons. [link via Cecile duBois] And Jonathan Last of the Weekly Standard writes that using the flip-flop issue against John Kerry is a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

It's an aberration from military standards, but it is not ... sadly ... an aberration for humanity, or even our own society, which is not yet excempt from the fall.

As for Bush -- Kerry and his cohorts can hardly call -Bush a flip-flop while maintaining Kerry is more nuanced in his policy, so this is pretty much a no brainer. It plays much better to Kerry's base to paint a Republican as an ideologe, and there is no gain in accusing Bush of flip-floping because the voters most concerned about inconsistency (conservatives) are not likely to vote for Kerry anyway. Meanwhile, if Kerry campaigns against Bush as a flip-flopper, the important swing votes might go, "see, I didn't think he was rigid." See what I'm getting at ... both campaigns are merely playing to streotypes because a more nuanced campaign message doesn't work in the media age.
