nominated themselves, beating out the critics who had the official nomination from the paper. [

we already knew that all it takes to get "nominated" for a Pulitzer is an application and a $75 fee.

Well remember, you're only submitting someone's name, not nominating them. That's why the Pulitzer folks refer to them as submissions, not nominees.
